1997
1st Thurber Prize established

Thurber Prize is established bi-annually and Ian Frazier wins for his book, Coyote vs. Acme. Ian Frazier goes on to win The Thurber Prize again in 2009, becoming the first (and only) person to win the award twice.

2005
The prize is now awarded annually

The prize is now awarded annually and this year Jon Stewart, Ben Karlin, David Javerbaum, and the rest of The Daily Show staff writers win for their book, America (The Book).

2015
First trio of all-women finalists

In a first for The Prize, a trio of all-female finalists competed for the title of winner. Julie Schumacher, Roz Chast, and Annabelle Gurwitch make history.

2018
The Thurber prize comes home— to columbus, OH

After years producing the show in NYC at Carolines, the Thurber Prize came home to James Thurber's very own hometown, Columbus, OH.

2022
The Thurber prize. Reimagined.

After a 2021 virtual-pandemic-special, The Thurber Prize has been reimagined for the stage— "Mark Twain meets Tony Awards."
